What is a Crypto Exchange? CEX vs DEX Explained

A cryptocurrency exchange is a platform where you can buy, sell, and trade digital assets. Exchanges are the primary way most people access cryptocurrency. There are two main types: centralised exchanges (CEX) and decentralised exchanges (DEX).

Centralised Exchanges (CEX)

Centralised exchanges are operated by a company that manages user accounts, holds funds, and provides a trading interface. They typically require identity verification (KYC). Examples include Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini. CEXs offer higher liquidity, customer support, and fiat currency on-ramps, but require you to trust the platform with your funds.

Decentralised Exchanges (DEX)

DEXs operate through smart contracts and allow peer-to-peer trading without a central authority. You connect your own wallet and trade directly. Examples include Uniswap, SushiSwap, and PancakeSwap. DEXs offer greater privacy and control but can be less user-friendly and have lower liquidity for some tokens.

How to Choose a Crypto Exchange

Security: Look for exchanges with strong security track records, cold storage, and insurance. Fees: Compare trading fees, withdrawal fees, and deposit methods. Supported assets: Ensure the exchange supports the cryptocurrencies you want. Jurisdiction: Confirm the exchange is available and regulated in your country. User experience: Consider whether you are a beginner or advanced trader.

Exchange Safety Tips

Enable two-factor authentication on your exchange account. Do not leave large amounts of crypto on an exchange long-term. Only use reputable, well-established exchanges. Withdraw funds to your own hardware wallet for long-term storage.

Popular Exchanges in Australia

Coinspot, Swyftx, and Independent Reserve are popular Australian crypto exchanges registered with AUSTRAC. International options include Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, which are also accessible from Australia.
